Christmas is coming and with it one of the most popular traditions in many countries, such as the Christmas trunk. With the nougat, the polvorones or the roscón de Reyes, the Christmas log has become one of the most widespread Christmas customs.

The Christmas log, also called ‘La Buche de Nöel’, comes from an ancient tradition that consisted of looking for a log from the forest or garden and putting it in the fireplace to burn throughout Christmas day. Later that tradition evolved and in the nineteenth century, this tradition was transferred to a Christmas sweet that is known as the Christmas trunk.

This dessert is a simple sponge cake that can be filled with Jijona nougat. The traditional thing is that we fill it with nougat but we can also do it with cream, vanilla, chocolate or any other flavor that we like. It can also be  decorated with chocolate chips, toppings or whatever the kids can think of.

The Christmas log is one of the sweets of these holidays and is usually eaten on Christmas Day as a dessert. It is also an easy recipe to make with children. And the ingredients are quite easy to find in any store or supermarket.

In about an hour you can prepare this simple recipe that everyone usually likes. The log looks great on the table on Christmas Day if you have decorated it in a careful and original way. Together with the  Christmas cupcake and the roscón de Reyes, it has become one of the basic sweets for these holidays.

Ingredients for the Christmas log

The basic ingredients you need for the cake are

  •  6 eggs
  • 70 grams of wheat flour
  • 40 grams of cornstarch
  • 80 grams of sugar
  • 100 grams of powdered chocolate
  • To make the filling you also need 250 ml. of liquid cream and 200 gr. Jijona nougat or whatever flavor you like
  • For the coverage you need 60 gr. of chocolate covering with 70% cocoa and 50 ml. liquid cream
  • If you want to decorate it, you will have to look for toppings or other elements that may look good.

Steps to prepare the Christmas log

To prepare the Christmas log you have to start with the filling. You need to put 100 ml of cream in the blender along with the crushed nougat or the ingredient you have chosen. You have to beat it until you get a homogeneous cream. Then you have to divide the cream in two, because one part will be for the filling and another for the coverage. You have to put one of the halves back in the blender with the leftover cream. You mix it carefully and let it cool in the fridge.

The second step is to make the cake for which you have to beat four egg yolks and two whites with the sugar until a uniform dough comes out. The four remaining clearings, you have to mount them to the point of snow. Then you add them to the dough and stir everything. Once mixed, stir in the flour, cornstarch and powdered chocolate.

Next you have to put it in the oven preheated to 180 degrees. Spread the dough evenly on a buttered baking sheet. You leave it 15 minutes until it begins to brown. You spread it out on greaseproof paper and let it cool.

The final touch

Finally, to prepare the coverage you have to break the chocolate into ounces and melt it in a saucepan. You add what is left of the cream. Then you mix it by also adding the second part of the mixture.

You spread the mixture that you had cooling in the fridge all over the cake. Carefully roll the cake loosely with the help of kitchen paper . To finish, pour the coverage on top and leave it in the fridge. If you like, you can simulate the stretch marks on the trunk with a fork.

To make it perfect you can decorate it with the children. They will surely enjoy decorating it. It can be decorated with colored toppings, lacasitos, figurines or sprinkled with icing sugar. One hour before serving it must be removed from the refrigerator. It is sure to look great on the dinner table or Christmas lunch with other Christmas sweets.
